Find Your Training Pace

Training too fast can leave you exhausted before your training has a chance to work.

Training too slowly may not provide the stimulus you’re looking for.

The goal is to find the right effort and pace for your current fitness.

That’s why RunWalk Tulsa uses the Jeff Galloway Magic Mile in Tulsa as part of our coaching system.

The Magic Mile gives us a practical way to use your current performance to help personalize your training.

Your pace is not a judgment. It’s information.

What Is the Magic Mile?

The Magic Mile is a one-mile pace assessment used to help establish training paces and recommendations based on your current fitness.

It is performed as a controlled, purposeful effort—not as an all-out race.

It is not a race.

There is:

  • No racing against other members
  • No pressure to beat someone else’s time
  • No comparison
  • No requirement to be fast

The goal is to learn something useful about you.

What Happens During a Magic Mile?

Your coach will explain how to approach the effort and help you prepare.

You’ll complete a one-mile effort at a controlled pace appropriate for the assessment.

The important part isn’t simply finishing the mile.

It’s completing it in a way that gives us useful information about your current fitness.

Your result becomes a baseline that can be used to guide your training.

Who Can Use the Magic Mile?

The Magic Mile can provide useful information for members across the RunWalk Tulsa training system, including:

  • Walkers
  • Run-walkers
  • Beginners
  • Members returning to fitness
  • Members training for longer distances
  • Members preparing for a race

Your pace will be different from someone else’s.

That’s exactly why we measure your pace instead of asking you to train at theirs.

Why Does RunWalk Tulsa Use It?

Your Magic Mile result helps your coach make more informed training recommendations.

It can help establish:

Training Pace

A pace appropriate for regular training rather than simply running as fast as you can.

Long-Workout Pace

Guidance for keeping longer workouts controlled and sustainable.

Run-Walk Recommendations

Information that can help determine an appropriate run-walk strategy.

Speed Work

A reference point for structured speed-development workouts.

Race Pace Estimates

A starting point for estimating potential race performance at longer distances.

Training Progression

A baseline you can compare with future assessments as your fitness develops.

Instead of guessing, we use information from your current performance.

Magic Mile Race Pace Predictions

The Magic Mile can also be used to estimate potential race pace.

RunWalk Tulsa uses the following calculations:

DistanceCalculation
5KMagic Mile time + 33 seconds
10KMagic Mile time × 1.15
10 MileMagic Mile time × 1.175
Half MarathonMagic Mile time × 1.20
MarathonMagic Mile time × 1.25

These calculations provide estimates, not guarantees.

Your actual race performance can be affected by:

  • Weather
  • Heat and humidity
  • Hills and terrain
  • Course conditions
  • Training history
  • Recovery
  • Nutrition
  • Hydration
  • Pacing
  • Race-day conditions

The Magic Mile gives us a starting point.

It does not predict the future with certainty.

The Magic Mile Is a Baseline, Not a Ranking

Your Magic Mile isn’t about where you fall compared with someone else.

It tells us where you are right now.

Think of it as a snapshot of your current fitness.

Then, as you train consistently, you can repeat the assessment and see how your training is affecting your performance.

A faster Magic Mile may indicate improved fitness.

But even if your time doesn’t change, the information can still help us make appropriate training decisions.

The goal isn’t to impress anyone.

The goal is to train appropriately.

Why We Repeat the Magic Mile

Fitness changes.

Training changes.

Life changes.

Your pace can change, too.

Repeating the Magic Mile gives us updated information so your training recommendations can change with your fitness.

Instead of asking:

“What pace did I used to run?”

we can ask:

“What does my current fitness tell us?”

That’s a much better starting point for your next phase of training.

Your Pace Is Personal

One of the biggest mistakes in training is assuming that everyone should train at the same pace.

The person next to you may have a different:

  • Fitness level
  • Training history
  • Goal
  • Recovery ability
  • Experience
  • Race distance

Your appropriate training pace is your pace.

That’s why RunWalk Tulsa uses pace-based coaching.

We have a pace for you.

It makes good coaching more specific.

Control What You Can

You can’t control the weather.

You can’t control the course.

You can’t control who shows up on race day.

But you can control how you prepare.

You can:

Train at an appropriate pace.

Fuel and hydrate appropriately.

Recover.

Show up consistently.

Adjust when your body and circumstances require it.

That’s the philosophy behind the Magic Mile.

Use the information you can control to make better training decisions.
